Although I used to watch lots of porn and was aware of the existence of porn cinemas I never really knew anything about them. Living in the UK, I knew there was at least one in Soho but wouldn’t have been able to say where it was, who visited them or what goes on in them. I assumed porn cinemas were dark spaces with a few rows of seats; sparsely visited mainly on weekends and in evenings by single men. I suppose I thought of the men as “sad” loners. Since I started writing about my experiences surrounding my porn use I became interested in finding out more about porn cinemas and decided to do a little research on porn cinemas in the UK. To start I looked for news reports on porn cinemas, finding a limited number of news sources referring these establishments. The first one is from 1994 and focused on the opening of a porn cinema called Fantasy Video, which now still operates in Islington. The article was written after 11 men died in a fire in another porn cinema, and has an approach of general curiosity towards porn with the writer making the cinema sound like [...]

Dr Bella Ellwood-Clayton, resident anthropologist come sexpert, released her new book this week Sex Drive: In Pursuit of Female Desire. In it she draws attention to something researchers and sex therapists have largely ignored (in this country anyway) and that’s the negative impact of porn on women’s libido. “In any given second, 28,258 internet users are viewing pornography and 372 internet users are typing adult terms into search engines. Every 39 minutes, a new pornographic video is created in the US …The effects of this pornography flood are yet to be fully understood, but it inarguably harms female libido” argues Ellwood-Clayton. We know porn is everywhere – “the wall paper of our lives” as Naomi Wolf puts it – with global sales exceeding 97 billion dollars annually. And we know that most of those viewing porn are men, almost all young men, and many older men too. Internet filter review statistics show that 97 percent of the searches for “free porn” were undertaken by men. An Australian survey of more than 1000 porn users found that men outnumbered women four-to-one or, in other words, men constituted 82 per cent of users. In addition, they found that 77 per cent of these [...]

Until a few years ago, my awareness of pornography was limited to glimpsing at magazines on the top shelf of the newsagent. Unless you were looking for those magazines, it was rare that you’d come into contact with porn by accident. The advent of the internet has obviously changed all that. But still, I naively thought that porn just meant some amateurish videos showing couples having sex. This changed just the other day. I was using a shared computer (using internet cafes is becoming a rather intimidating experience for me now though) and when I tried to type in the URL I wanted, all sorts of things came rolling down on the screen. “Father and daughter do it together, that is the best”, “Barely legal”, “schoolgirl dorms”, “exploited babysitters” and plenty more sites referring to women as sluts, whores, bitches etc. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly feminist but I cannot help being disturbed by the exclusively negative portrayal of women on those sites. Sex on the internet seems to be about domination, power, humiliation and pushing the limits of the actors and the people watching it, further and further back. Once, in another internet cafe, I had to call the [...]

I am a postgraduate student at London Metropolitan University who is currently undertaking research into the meanings of stag party sex tourism. Lately there’s been quite a lot of media coverage about the increase in the number of stag parties going abroad for stag weekends. The coverage has drawn attention to the fact that buying sexual services is often a part of the stag weekend abroad. I am seeking to explore this apparent relationship between the stag weekend abroad and buying sex.I am really in need for anonymous interview participants. Interviews will take place by telephone at a time that is convenient for you and only last about 20 – 30 minutes. Questions will explore your experiences, decision making and feelings about paying for sexual services on a stag party abroad and also about paying for sex in general. You will not be asked to give your real name and if you do give this it will not be used at any point when I am writing the paper. The information you give will be stored on a password protected system and in an encrypted file to ensure confidentiality. No one will be able to identify you in the research [...]

This month my blog is based around one quote from the article ”Is porn hijacking our sexuality? (Part 1)?” “After all, most of us would know pornography when we see it. But there’s no definition of pornography in UK law: “obscenity” is covered by the Obscene Publications Acts (obscene material is defined as that with “tends to deprave or corrupt)… these definitions are intended to be narrow, and there’s obviously a huge volume of material that is pornographic, and yet doesn’t fulfill the criteria for obscenity”. I am no expert on U.K. law but I would argue that in many ways depravity and corruption is at the core of pornography. In the U.S. a letter drafted and signed by 117 member of the House and Senate was sent to Attorney General Eric Holder stating that obscenity laws needed to be “vigorously enforced” because there is “Abundant evidence” that pornography causes harms such as: “violence against women, harm to children, sex trafficking, divorce and widespread addiction”. The specific research he refers to has not been released to the public, but one does not need to look far for evidence of the depravity and corruption of pornography. In fact, one can find evidence in the recent [...]

Last week saw the publication of the ‘Findings and Recommendations’ of the UK Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection. The inquiry was headed up by the Conservative MP Claire Perry, and while some may argue (or presume) that the report is couched in a “save the children” small ‘c’ conservative-style rhetoric, the cross-party inquiry’s findings and recommendations are actually far more balanced in their ideological approach than one might expect. Crucially, in the report the inquiry shows special concern regarding the “violent, degrading and coercive” pornographic material that teenagers are said to be accessing (p.13), and noted from evidence given by the NSPCC, that “overuse of pornographic material has been shown to desensitise children and young people to violent or sexually aggressive acts [and] diminish sympathy for victims of sexual assault” (ibid). While there are some references in the report that are reminiscent of traditional conservative worries about sexual activity amongst young people, most of it isn’t, and those of us who do not share such motivations must look beyond our presumptions about objections to pornography and learn to recognise pornography as a left issue. Pornography is an influential form of mass-media rich in misogyny and racism. Images and narratives [...]

Sheffield Against Sexism has organised a march for the 28th April called ‘We will not calm down ‘dear’ We are an inclusive group from all backgrounds and faith groups trying to stand up against the detrimental effect of the cuts on the vulnerable and women. We want to save our local women’s services like Rape Crisis, Sure Start, Domestic Abuse Forum, Scoopaid, Young Women’s Refuge as well as many more being directly hit as well as saying that they cannot expect women to keep quiet about picking up the brunt of the cuts. Furthermore we want to protest the council decision to grant Spearmint Rhino’s their Sex Entertainment license, despite unprecedented complaints because sexism make ‘good economic sense’. This means the key of our demands is to fight sexism in our city that values the sex/porn industry higher than women’s call for support and welfare. We believe there needs to be a campaign against the normalisation of strip-clubs, the sex industry and porn that encourages elected officials to make decisions despite popular opposition. We also want to raise awareness of how this fight is gender inclusive, and how men are not only feminists but can be a key part of [...]
