Pleasure vs. profit website launched

Pleasure vs. profit website launched

On December 14th The Women’s Support Project and Zero Tolerance‘s Pleasure vs. Profit launched it’s own website. The people behind the project acknowledge that young people are increasingly worried about the influence of pornography on their culture, relationships and sex lives, but that there is little information out there to help them understand and challenge the porn industry. Pleasure vs. Profit aims to fill this gap, providing the facts in an accessible, young-people friendly way as well as linking to further reading and resources for parents, carers, youth workers and teachers who want to tackle the subject with the young people they work with. To visit the Pleasure vs. Profit website, click here. Follow Pleasure vs. Profit and their Porcupine Campaign on Facebook here. You can view the Pleasure vs. Profit video and…

Porn and Me: an adolescent’s relationship with porn

Porn and Me: an adolescent’s relationship with porn

I am a teenager living in the US and this is a short account of my relationship with porn. I started watching porn when I was in 5th grade. Seriously? 5th Grade? Yup. I had gotten my first laptop, and it was so easy to access. All I had to do was open up an internet browser, search, and there it was. It started by just looking at girls in their underwear, but then slowly developed until I was watching porn. At first it was just every now and then, then it became more frequent, until I was watching it 3 or 4 days a week. ‘Lesbian’ porn, hand-jobs, and then the list goes darker. I would masturbate to it, and the endorphins would hit,…

European action on the great flood of child porn

European action on the great flood of child porn

We rarely mention child pornography on this site as we focus mainly on legal mainstream pornography and it’s socio-cultural roots and consequences. We see adult pornography if you like, as one of the most important social issues that we face in tackling both violence against women and wider gender inequality, as well as an important personal issue in the lives and relationships of many people. We have noticed that a lot of content that within adult pornography – such as violent, degrading and abusive behavior towards women – is currently accepted as normal in order to gratify men’s sexual “needs” and feel that this is something we want to address. Whilst child porn obviously also depicts violent, degrading and abusive behavior, its illegal status is…

(UK) Lib Dems move to challenge ‘Page 3′

(UK) Lib Dems move to challenge ‘Page 3′

One story coming out of the UK political party conference season is that of a motion passed at the Liberal Democrat conference which seeks to end The Sun’s ‘Page 3′ by restricting publications that sexually objectify women to the top shelf. The motion was led by former-MP Evan Harris who reportedly held up examples of ‘Page 3′ during a debate at the conference in Birmingham, and argued they – and the Sun newspaper – should only be stocked on the top shelf at news retailers. Harris argued that while “these images can be available for adults if they want to access them, but they should have to reach up to a higher shelf than what is at the general view for young people.” The motion…

We need to communicate about porn

We need to communicate about porn

One of the hardest things about writing about my personal experiences with and around pornography is that it is all compartmentalized. My use of pornography was never out in the open – it only existed in myself, in my own personal bubble. Only since I have stopped watching pornography has this bubble began to crack and slowly but surely things have started back into my memory that I had long since forgotten and supressed. One of the memories that recently floated back into my memory was of the loft where we hung up our washing when I was between 9 and 12. The walls of this space were adorned with pictures of heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden and with pictures of naked women from magazines…

Is pop music getting more ‘pornified’?

Last week Mike Stock, -one-third of all-conquering pop production house Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), which gave the world Bananarama, Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue and racked up more than 100 top 40 songs in the late eighties and early 1990s, including 13 number ones- spoke out against the music industry’s “slow but unmistakable descent into pornography”. He called on broadcasters to refuse to play videos or songs “they deem unfit”, saying it would force record companies to “to think again and clean up their act”. Music blogger Matilda Egere-Cooper said Stock has a point but that big-name backing is needed for his campaign to succeed. “The people who have power are the ones who can make this work – like a Kanye West or Alicia…

Indian Cybercafe Porn Trade

PATNA [The second largest city in Eastern India]: Among the city’s teenagers, particularly boys, watching pornography— seems to have become a habit. Over the past few years, this furtive doing has taken over other extra-curricular activities. An investigative visit to different cybercafes in the city provides some interesting findings. A check of the web browsing history at a cyber café in Boring Road revealed that of the 100 web pages, 80 page titles referred to pornographic materials and porn video downloads. Cybercafes in the city are mostly frequented by school and college-going boys and girls. They download porn movies in their mobile phones and also store them in data cards. Cybercafé owners have not limited themselves to allowing porn surfing to the visitors. Many have…

Porn-Blocking and Conservative Motives

TalkTalk’s new HomeSafe system is supposed to provide network-level filters against pornography. HomeSafe is also meant to provide protection against malware, as well as other types of content such as gambling and violent websites. Despite all the talk about malware and gambling sites it is no secret that this move is a direct response to the calls from Culture Minister Ed Vaizey and Conservative MP Claire Perry for ISPs to offer an (optional) filter to prevent access to pornographic sites. The Government met ISPs, including TalkTalk, earlier this year to discuss how ISPs might implement such a block. Other ISPs such as BT and Virgin have since responded with claims that such a filter as called for by the Government is not possible leaving TalkTalk…
