Anti-capitalism as base for Anti-porn

Trigger warning for violence and sexual assault After not having seen any pornography for more than 2 years I recently caught a glimpse anew flipping through the channels on the TV. I didn’t see much, as I flipped the channel immediately but there was one thing that struck me about the scene I did see. The scene in question was a typical porn scene. A woman was on her knees performing oral sex on a man, who was standing up. The only things visible were the naked woman’s body, the cock and the motion of the woman’s mouth up and down it. That much regarding the actual visual context. What struck me more though was the emotional content/atmosphere. Apart from mouth to cock contact there…

LA County Won’t Mandate Condoms In Porn

LOS ANGELES — An appeals court says the courts can’t compel public health officials to require and enforce condom use in porn. The June 16 ruling by the 2nd District Court of Appeals in Los Angeles upholds dismissal of a case brought against county health officials in 2009 by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. In its suit, AHF contended the officials should be compelled by the court to issue a regulatory order requiring adult film performers to wear condoms in sex scenes and get hepatitis B vaccinations. The appeals court said the county health officer has discretion in his duty to prevent and control disease. The advocacy group’s lawyer Brian Chase says the case will be appealed to the state Supreme Court.

(US) More Anti-porn groups protest against Playboy

Anti-porn groups are targeting advertisers of “The Playboy Club,” an NBC drama based the chain of nightclubs started by Hugh Hefner, in an effort to get the television network to cancel the show before its debut in the Autumn. The TV series is based on the real-life Playboy Club in Chicago, which was once one of the busiest nightclubs in the ’60s. The show is said to be about the ‘drama’ between the city’s powerful men who frequent the club and the Playboy “bunnies” that wait on them. Patrick Trueman, president of Morality in Media, an organisation that campaigns against porn in the media, said that the TV series will “contribute to the sexual objectification and exploitation of women and encourage greater acceptance of pornography”.…

Label Boss Is Right – There’s Too Much Porn In Pop

Contribution by Lara Williams So Adele managed to shift a few hundred thousand records literally without stripping off, throatily professing a love for bondage, or pretending to be a lesbian. Abort mission, Germaine Greer. The battle is won. XL Recordings founder Richard Russell this week told The Guardian: “The whole message with [Adele] is that it’s just music… there are no gimmicks, no selling of sexuality.” Aside from the patronising wonder triggered anytime a carb-eating woman achieves prominence within the music biz (see also, Beth Ditto) – singling Adele out for not selling sex suggests she is the anomaly. When did mainstream success as a female artist become so synonymous with sexuality? How did we get to a point where Adele managing to sell records…

Eff Off Hef! London Protest at Opening of Playboy Club

Over 200 women and men joined UK Feminista and OBJECT to shout, chant and sing ‘Eff Off Hef’ last Saturday (4th June) as Hugh Hefner attended the opening night of his new Playboy club in London. UK Feminista joined forces with OBJECT to protest against the return of the Playboy Club to London after thirty years since the original club closed down. Playboy clubs are just one of a myriad of products licensed by Playboy Enterprises, an international pornography corporation whose outputs include a mix of pornographic films, websites, TV programming and children’s stationary. Playboy is an international pornography empire, and its return to the high street works to legitimise a brand that has amassed hundreds of millions of pounds by sexually exploiting women. That’s…

Condoms in Porn “interrupt porn viewers’ fantasy of care-free sex”

In response to news that a new bill in California is being drafted in order to force porn production companies to ensure that their actors wear condoms the head of Hustler magazine, Larry Flynt, has said that seeing actors use protection interrupts porn viewers’ fantasy of care-free sex. This, quite obviously, is yet another example of porn barons putting profit before people. After outbreaks of HIV in 2004 and in 2010 amongst workers in the porn industry the sentiment behind Flynt’s defence of not using condoms shows a complete lack of consideration for the people in his employment. However, what may be even more damaging is the effect it has on those who watch porn. It is so often claimed that porn is the sex…

Porn auditions held for X Factor-style show

An X Factor-style show in South Africa is holding ‘live sex auditions’ where people who have never taken part in porn at all are asked to ‘perform’ in front of seven or so ‘judges’. A description of the auditions reads as follows: “The set was a red couch and the men had 10 minutes to perform and ejaculate. Stage fright… made this an extremely difficult challenge”… “One of my personal favourites, Chase, rose to the occasion and delivered. In terms of what we look for in female contestants besides the obvious looks, sex appeal and body, is the ability to make their men feel comfortable, set the tone for the scene and let them forget their surroundings.” This description is perfectly clear about what is…
