Last week the Guardian exposed a horrific example of how the porn industry keeps its ‘edge’ in the market. Well recorded in the porn industry is the continuous movement towards more and more hard-core, violent and degrading content. As time goes on what counts as mainstream porn becomes normalized in the quest for more shocking material making yesterday’s extreme, today’s mainstream. It is indicative of the capitalist model that traders in the market attempt to out-do each other to the next new and exciting product. This operates the same way in pornography.
‘Super-skinny’ porn sites are another example of this. Blatantly exploiting people who are unwell in order to feed an appetite for porn that is not only more shocking but that also strongly plays to the masculine obsession with dominance and control over women. Not only do those who suffer from anorexia nervosa often look younger they are also obviously weaker than the non-anorexic male porn performer they are shown with in porn. Women’s comparative physical weakness to men is accentuated to the extreme in ‘Super-skinny’ porn. Not only does the industry move to more hard-core and violent ground, this new ground is often importantly about power and dominance over women.

Women are soft and chubby, men are hard and lean – that is a basic æsthetic.
First it has to be said that anorexia is a very serious illness and using girls in this way is vile. However, Shropshire Lad I just want to stand up for thin girls at this stage, not all women are soft and chubby. I’m not soft and chubby and my husband isn’t gay (or hard and lean for that matter)!
Hehe, I hear you. Indeed, one of the interesting outcomes of watching amateur porn as opposed to gender-difference-exaggerating commercial porn is that you realize that often men and women are more similar than dissimilar, also with regard to body shape.
I think that if I was to teach sex education to youngsters in a porn-saturated society, I would stress how similar our bodies and bodily concerns are:
- It’s hard to achieve orgasm through penis-in-vagina intercourse. Both sexes come more easily from having their “tap” (penis / clit) stimulated.
- A vagina can be likened to a man’s testicles. Essential to reproduction, nice to have stimulated, but not really the best orgasm-producing organs.
- Just as men worry about penis size and man boobs, women worry about the look of their labia and breast size. So one hidden Angst and one obvious out-in-the-world-for-everybody-to-see Angst for both sexes.
- When lying, most natural female breasts are not convex but rather flat. When leaning over, many men have obvious man boobs.
The only major difference besides women’s ability to conceive and give birth is that anal sex is far more pleasurable for men than for women, since men have their G-spot, the prostate, in the anus!
I think while drawing the comparisons you do, may be an interesting way to think about gender difference and possibly prove beneficial to young people it does completely ignore the fact that women and girls have a huge amount of extra pressure on their ‘angst’ than men do.
I don’t think that is true in today’s post-industrial world, when the male body no longer is a machine but a mere “showpiece” like the female body.
But yes, it will probably be beneficial to point out to young body-angst-ridden females that males as a whole have lower standards, both with regard to themselves, their partners and moral issues like pornography.
Many men won’t care if his partner gets as chubby and flabby as himself as long as he can indulge in pornography. Men are great compartmentalizers.
Sometimes I feel utter despair, that there are always more ways for women to be exploited than my mind can even fathom..I felt the same when I first watched Fat Girls And Feeders, and now there are Starvers too; both extremes leave women bedridden and dying. This clearly has nothing to do with healthy sexual response, where fertility is a normal trigger. There isn’t an animal in existence which gets aroused at the sight of a dying individual of their species.
As a society, we should’ve quit idolising individuals with a BMI of under 17.5 long ago, but instead the ‘beauty’ (fashion) industry made them into heroes, the ultimate feminine being, the ultimate male prize, ‘Super’ in fact.
Until the sexualisation of really young, thin girls in fashion stops, porn will just follow their lead I’m afraid, and women will die, starving from a lack of self-love.
