“Men’s leisure and women’s lives”

It’s over ten years now since Susan Shaw asked 32 women for their reactions to pornography.  She showed the women images of porn that would now be considered pretty tame centre-fold pictures from well known magazines and took time to discuss their responses with them.  What she found was that women’s reactions to pornography were consistently negative. While shock and upset were common reactions to the more violent pictures – not surprisingly – the reactions of the women to non-violent images were very different.  It’s this part of her study that I want to tell in more detail as I would guess that many people consider mainstream, softer porn to be much less of a problem.  And don’t forget that she was showing photos...

No Regard

When talking about the damage that pornography does there are many places to start: “The scenes you see in porn aren’t fun at all…To be blunt, shooting a scene is not easy…it’s not enjoyable…girls are getting hurt.“ Sierra Sinn – former pornography performer “My first scene was booked and I was terrified. I tried backing out …but the male porn star I first met said I could not back out because I had signed a contract. I was threatened that if I did not do the scene I was going to get sued for lots of money. So I ended up taking shots of vodka to get me through it.“  Michelle Avanti – former pornography performer Production is where most of the direct and...

What is Objectification?

What does this mean? If taken literally, it means nothing because objects don’t have sexuality; only beings do. But to say that porn portrays women as “sexual beings” makes for poor rhetoric. Usually, the term sex objects means showing women as body parts, reducing them to physical objects. What is wrong with this? Women are as much their bodies as they are their minds or souls. No one gets upset if you present women as “brains” or as spiritual beings. If I concentrated on a woman’s sense of humor to the exclusion of her other characteristics, is this degrading? Why is it degrading to focus on her sexuality? This extract, from A Feminist Defence of Pornography, demonstrates the ambiguity of objectification. The writer clearly...

Pornography & Me

I have never written on pornography and I am finding it quite hard to know how to make a start. I am just not sure what to focus on: the personal, or the facts / the political aspect. Focusing on the facts or the political aspects would be easier for me to be honest, as I would not have to delve into my past as a user of pornography. I could stay clear of accepting responsibility for the harm I have caused by supporting an industry that degrades, depersonalizes, humiliates and abuses its female performers. I could stop myself from thinking about what effect watching porn has had on me and how I view women at times. I could basically not bother thinking about...

Three Seconds of Pornography

Trigger warning for violence and sexual assault I’ve only seen three seconds of pornography. I clicked on a thumbnail on a particular site having read of its popularity in a weekend newspaper. I watched a woman, naked, crouching in front of a man as he thrust his penis in and out of her throat more or less furiously. After they both paused for a rest, he proceeded to slap her many times, with some force across the face, forehand and backhand. After another rest, he repeated the thrusting. At the next break the woman looked at the camera for no more than three seconds and began to cry. Then she recovered herself, or surrendered herself, and the man proceeded again to slap her vigorously...

Hello everyone… and welcome to the Anti Porn Men Project!

Hello everyone… and welcome to the Anti Porn Men Project. In case you haven’t checked out the ‘About’ page yet… The AntiPornMenProject aims to provide an online space for (mainly) men to write about and discuss anti-porn issues, providing others who are perhaps only just arriving at anti-porn thoughts a place to read, ask questions and feel part of a wider movement. We also hope to effectively provide and sign-post anti-porn resources and news articles concerning pornography. We hope this website will be used as a place to find opinions and resources for those who are genuinely interested in respectful engagment and -we hope- adoption of an anti-porn attitude. It is the general opinion of those involved in the AntiPornMenProject that pornography is one...
